What Are the Advantages of Running AI Models Directly on a Personal Device?

· By Michel Valenzuela, Founder of Daryl

Running AI models directly on a personal device can keep requests on your computer, enable offline responses, and reduce dependence on remote AI infrastructure. It also gives you more responsibility for the hardware, software, and files that make the experience work.

For someone considering a local AI assistant, those advantages are practical. They affect where a conversation goes, when the assistant is available, and what resources it needs.

They are also central to why I’m building Daryl, a personal AI for Mac designed around local conversation and support for decisions.

What does running AI on a personal device mean?

It means the model processes your input using the resources of your computer, phone, or another supported device.

For a local text assistant, the application loads an installed model, supplies your request, and displays the generated response. That processing can happen without sending the request to a remote AI service.

Other features need their own assessment. Voice recognition, spoken playback, web searches, and connected services may use local or remote components.

An application’s location on your desktop does not establish where all its processing happens.

1. Your requests can stay on your device

The most direct privacy advantage is reducing the need to transmit conversation content elsewhere.

Suppose you want to examine an unfinished business idea. You explain the problem, question your assumptions, and consider several directions before choosing one.

A locally processed conversation can keep that exchange on your computer.

That is useful when the context includes personal thinking or information you would prefer not to submit to an external AI service.

The application’s wider behaviour still matters. Check what it stores, whether it sends diagnostics, and whether files are included in cloud backups or synchronisation. Local processing is a meaningful privacy boundary, but it is not a complete description of the product.

2. Supported features can work offline

Once the necessary software and models are installed, local AI can generate responses without an internet connection.

That can be useful while travelling, working with unreliable connectivity, or deliberately disconnecting to concentrate.

You could discuss a situation you describe, revise text you provide, or examine information already available to the application.

Retrieving current information is different. Web searches, online accounts, downloads, and remote services still require connectivity.

For voice to work fully offline, speech recognition and spoken playback also need supported local components.

3. Core processing is less dependent on a remote service

A local model does not need a remote inference service to generate each response.

That removes some dependencies from the interaction, such as the availability of that service and your connection to it.

It introduces others. Your device needs sufficient resources. The application needs to remain compatible with its operating environment. Licensing or activation requirements may also affect access.

The advantage is a different arrangement of dependencies, with more of the core experience operating on hardware you control.

4. You can use your existing computing resources

Local AI puts your device’s processing power and memory to work.

For a workload that fits the hardware, this can provide a useful alternative to obtaining every response through a remotely hosted model.

It does not make the experience cost-free. Software may carry a purchase price or subscription, and processing uses energy and system resources. Some workloads may require hardware you do not already have.

The practical question is whether the application performs the tasks you need comfortably on your current device.

5. Local context can remain close to your work

A personal assistant may use information you supply about a project, a preference, or an ongoing goal.

When an application supports local storage and retrieval of that context, it can make the information available without requiring a remotely hosted memory system.

The implementation matters. You should understand what is preserved, how it influences responses, and how to correct or remove it.

Local processing alone does not mean an application has memory, access to your documents, or permission to inspect other software. Those are separate capabilities.

What are the disadvantages of running AI locally?

The main trade-off is the capacity of your device.

Models require memory and processing resources. Larger workloads can affect response speed, battery life, and the performance of other applications.

Capabilities also vary considerably. A local model may handle a focused task well while struggling with something more demanding. Cloud infrastructure can support models and services beyond what a typical personal device can run.

Installation and model management can add complexity, depending on the application.

Local AI remains capable of mistakes. Processing an answer on your computer does not establish that the answer is accurate.

Is local AI faster than cloud AI?

Not necessarily.

Local processing avoids sending the request to a remote model and waiting for its response over the network. However, generation speed depends on the model, hardware, and application.

A cloud service may generate responses quickly using more powerful infrastructure. Connectivity and service demand can affect that experience.

Compare the actual task on the device and service you intend to use.

Does local AI mean no subscription?

No. Processing location and pricing are separate choices.

Some local applications charge recurring fees. Others use a one-time purchase or offer free software. Updates and optional online services may have separate terms.

For Daryl, I have chosen a purchase model with no mandatory monthly subscription and optional renewal for further feature updates after the included update period.

That reflects how I want people to retain use of their eligible licensed version.

Can local AI still search the internet?

Yes, if the application provides that capability.

The model can process information locally while an online component retrieves webpages or sends search queries.

Those connections involve information leaving the device. The application should explain what it sends and what access you are granting.

Local AI can be connected when a task requires it, with clear boundaries around the connection.

How do these advantages relate to Daryl?

Daryl is currently in development for Mac, with local processing for its core conversations.

I’m building it around natural interaction and help examining decisions: bringing a situation into view, clarifying priorities, and considering trade-offs.

Local memory and an Omega browser integration are part of the development direction. Their capabilities will be described as they are verified and ready.

The appeal of on-device AI, for me, is having useful intelligence available close to your work and under arrangements you can understand.

You should know where the processing happens, what the application needs, and what you control.
