Can Local AI Access Current Information?
· By Michel Valenzuela, Founder of Daryl
Yes, if the application provides a way to access current sources.
A model running on your computer does not automatically know what happened today. It can work with information you provide, and an application can connect it to documents, websites, or search tools.
Local processing describes where the model generates its response. Access to current information depends on what the application makes available to it.
Understanding that distinction helps you choose the right workflow for the question.
Why might a local AI model have outdated information?
A model’s built-in knowledge comes from its training.
Downloading it today does not mean it was trained on today’s information. Its knowledge may be incomplete, outdated, or inaccurate even for events before its training ended.
Running it on newer hardware does not change that.
If you ask about a company’s current pricing, a newly released product, or this morning’s news, the model needs an appropriate current source.
Without one, it may produce a plausible answer based on older information.
How can you give local AI current information?
There are several approaches.
| Approach | How the information reaches the assistant | What to understand |
|---|---|---|
| Paste relevant text | You supply it in the conversation | The assistant can use the material you included |
| Open a supported local document | The application makes document content available | File support and processing behavior vary |
| Use a retrieval feature | The application finds relevant material in a collection | The collection needs to contain current information |
| Enable online search | A connected service returns search results | Queries or other information may leave your device |
| Use a browser integration | The application obtains information from web pages | Access, permissions, and capabilities depend on the product |
None of these approaches guarantees a correct answer.
They provide information the assistant can use. You still need to check whether the source is suitable and whether the response represents it accurately.
Can I keep the reasoning local while using online sources?
Yes, an application can retrieve information online and then process that information with a local model.
For example, it could obtain a public product page and ask the local model to compare the listed features against your requirements.
That is different from sending the full conversation to a hosted model.
However, the online step still involves communication outside your computer. A search service receives a query. A website receives a request.
The exact information shared depends on the implementation.
A useful application should explain what it sends, where it sends it, and what permission you are granting.
Does online search update the model permanently?
Usually, no.
Search results can become part of the context used to generate a response without changing the model itself.
You might provide a new pricing page, ask a question, and receive an answer based on that page. The model has not necessarily learned those prices permanently.
Whether the information remains available later depends on the application’s storage, memory, and retrieval behavior.
For an important question, check the source again when you return to it. A saved answer can become outdated.
What can local AI do with current information while offline?
It can work with current material you have already obtained.
Suppose you download a new project brief before travelling. A compatible local application may help you organize its requirements or prepare questions without internet access.
The information is current because you supplied a current document.
The assistant cannot independently check whether someone revised that document after you downloaded it.
That creates a useful boundary:
Offline AI can help you interpret the information available to it. It cannot verify changes it has no way to observe.
How should you ask questions that depend on current facts?
Make the source and date explicit.
Instead of:
“What does this service cost?”
Try:
“Using this pricing page, checked today, explain the cost of the plan that meets these requirements. Identify anything the page does not make clear.”
Instead of:
“Which option is available?”
Try:
“Based on these availability details, compare the options. Do not assume that an unlisted option is available.”
These requests make the basis of the answer easier to assess.
You can also ask the assistant to separate three things:
- What the source states.
- What it infers from that information.
- What remains unknown.
That is particularly useful when a confident answer would otherwise hide missing information.
Why do sources still matter after the AI answers?
Because a source can be current and still unsuitable.
A search result may summarize an old page. A third-party article may describe a previous version of a product. Two pages may disagree.
Check the underlying material, its date, and what it actually supports.
For product features, the provider’s current documentation is generally the best starting point. For a project decision, the latest agreed brief may matter more than an older conversation.
Ask for links or document references where the application supports them, then inspect the details that could change your decision.
How does this relate to Daryl?
We are building Daryl around local core conversations and decision assistance on Mac.
Many useful conversations begin with information you already have: your options, constraints, deadlines, and priorities.
Other questions need outside information.
An Omega browser integration is part of Daryl’s development direction, intended to support browser-based work with permission. Its specific capabilities and availability need to be confirmed through development and testing.
Daryl is still in development. We should not describe planned research capabilities as available today.
The product needs to make the difference clear between reasoning from supplied context and checking an external source.
Frequently asked questions
Does local AI know today’s news?
Not automatically. It needs current information supplied by you or obtained through an enabled feature.
Can local AI search the web?
Some applications provide that capability. The model’s local execution alone does not provide web access.
Does web access mean the whole conversation goes to the cloud?
Not necessarily. What leaves the device depends on the application and the feature. Check the product’s explanation.
Can an offline assistant analyze a document published today?
Yes, if you already have the document and the application supports processing it locally.
Will Daryl conduct online research?
Browser-based work through Omega is in development. Available capabilities and permission controls will need to be documented when released.
Match the workflow to the question
If the answer depends on what changed today, obtain a current source.
If you already have the relevant information, local AI can help you organize it, compare options, and identify what is missing.
Knowing which situation you are in makes the assistant more useful and its answer easier to evaluate.
