Which Privacy-Focused AI Assistants Work Without Cloud Connectivity?

· By Michel Valenzuela, Founder of Daryl

An AI assistant can work without cloud connectivity when the features you use are processed locally and their required models are installed on your device. LM Studio and Jan support offline conversations with local models. Ollama supports local model execution, including a local-only configuration.

Daryl is a personal AI for Mac currently in development, with local processing for its core conversations.

However, offline functionality and privacy are separate things to evaluate. You need to understand both where the processing happens and how the application handles your information.

What qualifies as an offline AI assistant?

For a text conversation, the application needs to generate responses without contacting a remote AI service.

That requires a compatible local model, the software to run it, and sufficient resources on your device.

A complete voice experience has additional requirements. Speech recognition and spoken playback must also work locally if you want the interaction to remain offline.

Some applications combine local and cloud features. Check the specific workflow you intend to use rather than relying on a general product description.

Which tools support local conversations?

The following are options to investigate through their official documentation:

ToolOffline capability to evaluateWhat deserves attention
LM StudioConversations using downloaded local modelsModel requirements and any optional connected features
JanConversations with an installed local modelWhether a local or remote provider is selected
OllamaLocal model execution, potentially through a connected interfaceLocal-only settings and the behaviour of the surrounding application
DarylCore local conversations being developed for MacVerified launch capabilities and information controls

The tools serve different purposes. Some help you explore and run models. Others provide an assistant interface around them.

The appropriate choice depends on the tasks you need and the configuration you are comfortable maintaining.

Does working offline mean my conversations are private?

Offline processing avoids transmitting the request to a remote AI service during that interaction.

That is a useful boundary. It does not explain everything that may happen to the resulting information.

The application might retain a conversation history. Its files might be included in backups or synchronisation. Diagnostic reports may have their own information practices.

Other people with access to your device or account may also be able to access stored material, depending on the setup.

Evaluate the complete arrangement before bringing sensitive information into the application.

What should I check in a privacy-focused assistant?

Look for clear answers to five practical questions.

Where is the conversation processed?

Confirm that the selected model runs on your device.

An installed application may offer remote providers alongside local ones. The interface can look similar in either mode.

What is retained?

Check whether the application stores conversation text, uploaded files, recordings, or selected context.

Find out where those items are stored and whether you can choose what to keep.

What leaves the device?

Review optional connections, diagnostics, synchronisation, and any online features.

A local model can still be part of an application that communicates with external services.

What can I control?

Look for understandable ways to review, export, correct, or delete retained information where those functions are supported.

Listening controls and permissions also matter for voice.

What happens when connectivity returns?

An offline test establishes what works while disconnected.

It does not establish whether stored information is later synchronised or transmitted. Review the application’s documentation and your device’s backup settings separately.

Can a private local assistant still access the internet?

Yes, if you enable a supported online feature.

A local assistant can retrieve a webpage or send a search query while processing the resulting information on your computer.

That connection involves an information exchange. The application should explain what it sends and what permission you are granting.

For example, a search may require a location and a general requirement without needing the private project context you supplied during the conversation.

The boundary should be specific enough for you to make an informed choice.

How can I test offline operation?

Install the required resources and select local processing. Then disconnect the device from the network.

Start a new conversation, request a response, and close and reopen the application.

If you intend to use voice or supported documents, test those workflows too.

Record which features work and which ask for connectivity. Also review activation or licence-check requirements before relying on the application during extended offline use.

This is a functionality check. Understanding privacy still requires examining storage and information practices.

Is local AI appropriate for confidential client work?

That depends on the information, the application, and your obligations.

Keeping processing on your device can reduce external transmission. It does not automatically establish that a particular use is permitted.

Follow the agreements and rules attached to the work. Use anonymised or reduced context when it is sufficient, and assess how the application and device retain the material.

A privacy-focused workflow begins with choosing what the task actually needs.

How is Daryl approaching this?

I’m building Daryl around personal conversation and support for decisions on Mac.

Core conversations are designed for local processing. The intention is to provide a useful place to explore ideas and examine choices without requiring those exchanges to be processed by a remote AI service.

Local memory and optional browser integration are part of the development direction. Their information practices and controls need to be explained as those capabilities become ready.

Daryl is currently in pre-launch. Final offline behaviour and release requirements will be communicated after verification.

Choose a boundary you can understand

A private assistant should make its processing, storage, and connections understandable.

You should know what happens when you speak or type, what remains afterward, and what changes when you enable an online feature.

That clarity is part of the experience I want Daryl to provide.
