Which Software Platforms Enable Offline AI Chatbot Functionality?

· By Michel Valenzuela, Founder of Daryl

LM Studio, Jan, and Ollama support running local AI models that can generate chatbot responses without an internet connection once the necessary software and models are installed. Their interfaces and configuration options differ, so the right choice depends on what you want to do and how much setup you want to manage.

Daryl is another product being developed in this space, with a specific focus on personal conversation and support for decisions on Mac. It is currently in pre-launch.

Before choosing a platform, it helps to understand what makes a chatbot work offline.

What does an offline AI chatbot need?

An offline chatbot needs three essential components:

  • An installed model capable of generating responses.
  • Software that runs that model on your device.
  • An interface where you can enter a request and receive an answer.

Your computer also needs sufficient memory, processing resources, and storage for the selected setup.

A desktop interface alone does not establish offline functionality. Some installed applications use remote models. Others let you choose between local and cloud processing.

Check the model and processing mode you are actually using.

Does LM Studio work offline?

Yes. LM Studio’s documentation states that it can operate offline once model files are available on your computer.

Its offline features include chatting with local models and processing supported documents locally.

You still need connectivity to obtain models through online downloads, check for updates, or use features that involve external services.

LM Studio is worth examining if you want to explore local models through a desktop application. Review its current system requirements and the requirements of the model you intend to run.

Does Jan support offline AI chat?

Yes. Jan’s documentation describes local models as running on your machine without an API key and supporting offline use.

Jan also supports connections to cloud providers. That makes your model selection important: choosing a remote provider changes where the request is processed and introduces a connectivity requirement.

For offline conversation, install a compatible local model and select it for the interaction.

If you enable connectors or online tools, assess their requirements separately. A local model cannot retrieve a current webpage without a network connection.

Can Ollama run without cloud connectivity?

Ollama supports local model execution and provides a local-only configuration that disables its cloud features.

It can be used to run local models and supply them to applications or interfaces that connect to it.

Ollama also offers cloud capabilities, so using the software does not automatically mean every model you select runs on your device.

Check the selected model, the configuration, and the behaviour of any connected interface. If offline use is your objective, follow the official guidance for local-only operation and test the complete workflow.

How do these platforms compare?

PlatformRelevant capabilityWhat to check
LM StudioDesktop chat with installed local modelsHardware requirements, model compatibility, and optional connected features
JanDesktop assistant with local model supportWhether the selected model is local or cloud-hosted
OllamaLocal model execution for direct use or connected applicationsLocal-only configuration and the interface used with it

These are examples of platforms in the category, rather than a ranking of every available product.

Your intended workload should guide the comparison.

Can an offline chatbot search the web?

It can only retrieve live online information when a connection is available.

A local chatbot can work with its installed model and information supplied to the application. It may discuss text you enter or supported files stored on your device.

Searching the web, accessing a remote account, or retrieving a current webpage requires connectivity.

An application can combine local AI processing with online retrieval. Those are separate parts of the workflow and should be explained separately.

Can I use voice with an offline chatbot?

Potentially, if the application supports local speech recognition and local spoken playback.

Text generation, speech recognition, and audio output are separate components. Offline text chat does not establish that the entire voice experience works offline.

Check the supported languages, required downloads, and processing arrangements for each voice feature.

Is offline AI automatically private?

Offline processing reduces the need to transmit requests to a remote AI service, but privacy depends on the application’s full behaviour.

Review conversation storage, diagnostics, backups, synchronisation, and optional connections.

Also check any interface connected to the local model. The model runner and the application you interact with may have different settings.

How can I verify that my chatbot works offline?

Install the application and model, select local processing, and then disconnect your computer from the network.

Try the tasks you intend to rely on:

  • Start a new conversation.
  • Submit a request and receive a response.
  • Open a supported local document, if relevant.
  • Test voice separately, if available.
  • Close and reopen the application.

This establishes whether the tested workflow functions offline. It does not replace reviewing the application’s information practices or licensing requirements.

Where does Daryl fit?

I’m building Daryl for people who want an approachable personal AI experience on Mac, centred on conversation and clearer decisions.

Its core conversations are designed for local processing. Final offline behaviour, hardware compatibility, voice support, and installation requirements will be documented as the release is verified.

Daryl is currently in pre-launch, so it should be considered a forthcoming product rather than an available offline download.

The goal is to make local intelligence useful through an application people can comfortably bring into their everyday thinking.
