Which AI Apps Can You Buy Once Without a Mandatory Subscription?

· By Michel Valenzuela, Founder of Daryl

Some AI applications offer a one-time purchase or perpetual licence, including TypingMind’s individual offering and BoltAI. However, purchasing the application does not necessarily include the AI processing it connects to.

You may still pay separately for model usage, optional services, or future updates.

Daryl’s planned purchase model takes another approach: a Mac application with local processing for core conversations, no mandatory monthly subscription, and an optional renewal for further feature updates.

The useful comparison is what you can keep using after the initial purchase and what could still generate additional charges.

Licence information checked October 12, 2026. Confirm current terms before purchasing.

What does “one-time purchase” actually include?

It describes the payment for a particular licence.

It does not automatically mean unlimited cloud AI usage, every future upgrade, or permanent compatibility with future operating systems.

Separate three questions:

  • What software does the purchase licence you to use?
  • What supplies the AI responses, and how is that usage charged?
  • Which updates and optional services are included?

Those answers determine the practical cost of using the application.

Does TypingMind offer a lifetime licence?

TypingMind advertises a lifetime licence for its individual offering.

Its pricing page states that API costs and additional cloud storage are excluded from the purchase price.

That means the interface purchase and the underlying AI usage are separate.

If you connect a paid AI provider, its charges can continue even though the application itself does not require a recurring licence payment.

TypingMind Teams has separate subscription pricing, so distinguish the individual product from the team offering.

Does BoltAI offer a one-time purchase?

BoltAI documents a perpetual licence with one year of updates.

Its licensing guidance describes an optional renewal for another year of updates. It also identifies the product as using your own API key for supported provider connections.

A cloud provider’s usage charges therefore need to be considered separately from the application licence.

BoltAI also describes support for optional local models through compatible tools. The processing arrangement depends on the model and configuration you select.

How will Daryl’s purchase model work?

Daryl is currently in pre-launch.

The planned Founding Edition is $49 as a one-time purchase, with a regular price of $79. The purchase includes twelve months of feature updates.

After the included period, a $39 annual update renewal is optional. Your eligible licensed version continues working if you choose not to renew.

Core conversations are designed for local processing, using your Mac’s resources rather than a paid remote model for each response.

Future optional services would need their own clearly stated terms. The core purchase should not be interpreted as including unspecified online services.

These products have different purposes and processing arrangements. The table compares licensing approaches rather than declaring them interchangeable.

Can an AI app have no subscription but still incur ongoing costs?

Yes.

A one-time-purchase interface may send requests to a provider that charges according to usage.

Those charges are different from a subscription, but they are still ongoing costs.

Optional storage, synchronisation, or other services may introduce recurring charges too.

Before purchasing, identify which features work with the licence alone and which require another paid service.

Does a perpetual licence include all future updates?

Not necessarily.

A perpetual licence can provide continued use of an eligible version while limiting the included update period.

An optional renewal may extend access to newer releases.

Check what happens after that period ends. Can you continue using the existing version? Which improvements require renewal? Are optional services treated differently?

The terms should make those distinctions understandable.

Is local AI cheaper than using a cloud service?

There is no universal answer.

Local processing uses your computer’s resources and may avoid remote model usage charges. You still need compatible hardware, software, storage, and energy.

A cloud service may offer a useful capability at a cost that suits your workload. A local application may be a better fit for another task.

Compare the complete arrangement over the period you expect to use it.

Include the work required to configure, maintain, and review the system.

Does “lifetime” mean the application will work forever?

A licence promise and future technical compatibility are different matters.

Operating systems and hardware change. External providers can alter their services. Software may need maintenance to remain compatible.

Read what the developer means by lifetime access and which version or product the licence covers.

Avoid assuming that the word includes every future capability or removes every dependency.

Why I chose this approach for Daryl

I want people to be able to buy Daryl and continue using the eligible version they purchased.

Further development needs support. An optional update renewal gives people a way to receive improvements when those improvements are useful to them.

Local processing also lets me build the core experience around the application and the user’s own computer.

The intention is a straightforward arrangement: understand the purchase, understand the update period, and decide whether future improvements justify renewing.

Daryl is being built for personal conversation and support for decisions on Mac.

Its purchase model should give people the same clarity I want the product to bring to their thinking.
