Can You Use AI Without a Monthly Subscription?

· By Michel Valenzuela, Founder of Daryl

Yes. AI is available through several payment models, including free access, usage-based billing, one-time software purchases, and local applications that run downloaded models on your computer.

The important question is what each option includes.

Buying an application once does not necessarily include the AI service it connects to. Running a model locally avoids hosted inference charges for that model, but still uses your computer’s resources.

To compare costs properly, you need to understand what you are paying for.

What are the alternatives to an AI subscription?

There are four common approaches.

ApproachHow it worksWhat to check
Free accessUse a service or application without a recurring paymentLimits, included features, and any paid requirements
Usage-based accessPay according to the model service you useRates, spending controls, and separate application fees
One-time application purchaseBuy a software licenseWhether model access and future updates are included
Local model useRun a downloaded model on your computerHardware compatibility, licensing, and application costs

These approaches can overlap.

An application might be purchased once, connect to a usage-based cloud provider, and also support local models.

The headline price alone will not tell you the total cost.

Why do many AI products charge monthly?

A hosted AI service has ongoing costs.

Each conversation uses computing resources. The provider may also maintain accounts, storage, connected tools, and other infrastructure.

Subscriptions can package that access into a predictable payment. For someone who uses the included features regularly, that can be a reasonable arrangement.

The difficulty comes when the payment continues regardless of how useful the product has become in your routine.

If you use an assistant occasionally, a different payment structure may fit better.

Is usage-based AI cheaper?

It can be, but it depends on how you use it.

Usage-based billing lets you pay for measured consumption instead of maintaining a monthly plan. That can suit occasional use.

However, lengthy conversations, large inputs, repeated requests, and different model rates can change the bill.

A useful comparison needs your actual workload.

Consider someone who uses AI twice a week to refine a short brief. Their costs may look very different from someone processing extensive documents every day.

If you choose usage-based access, understand how to monitor spending and whether the provider offers enforceable limits.

Does a one-time purchase include unlimited AI?

Only if the product explicitly includes it under those terms.

A one-time purchase may cover the interface alone.

If that interface connects to a hosted model through your own API account, the provider can still charge separately for usage.

Check three things before buying:

  • What does the application license include?
  • Who provides the model, and how is its use paid for?
  • What happens when the included update period ends?

“One-time purchase” describes a payment arrangement. It does not establish where processing happens or whether additional services cost money.

Can local AI remove recurring model charges?

When a model runs on your own computer, its responses do not require paid inference from a hosted model provider.

That can make local AI attractive for recurring conversations.

There are still practical costs. You need suitable hardware, storage, electricity, and software that supports the model. Some applications may charge for their features or updates.

Optional online services can also introduce separate costs.

For someone with a compatible computer, local processing offers a way to use AI without making hosted model access part of every conversation.

How should you compare the total cost?

Start with a year rather than a month.

A hypothetical $20 monthly subscription costs $240 over twelve months. A hypothetical $60 application purchase costs $60 initially, but its total could be higher if it requires separately billed model access.

Neither figure tells you which product is more useful.

Compare the cost against the work it helps you do:

QuestionWhy it matters
How often will I use it?Occasional and daily use justify different spending
Which features do I need?A lower price is less useful if essential features are missing
Are model charges separate? The application price may be only part of the cost
Are updates optional? This affects future spending and continued use
Does my computer support it?Hardware requirements can change the economics

A tool that saves you substantial time may justify a recurring payment. A simpler local application may be sufficient for the conversations you have most often.

What is the planned payment model for Daryl?

We are building Daryl around a one-time software purchase without a mandatory monthly subscription.

The planned Founding Edition is $49, with a regular price of $79, including twelve months of feature updates.

After that first year, the planned annual update renewal is optional at $39. If you do not renew, your licensed version keeps working.

Daryl is still in development, so final purchase terms should be checked at launch.

The principle behind this structure is straightforward: continued use of the version you bought should not depend on maintaining a subscription.

Why does this fit Daryl’s purpose?

Daryl is being developed as a personal AI for Mac, with local core conversations, voice and typing, and decision assistance.

You might use it intensively while working through a project, then less frequently during a quieter period.

We want the payment structure to accommodate that ordinary variation.

Local processing also supports the approach by keeping core conversations on your computer rather than relying on a hosted model service for each response.

The product still has to earn its place through usefulness. A one-time price cannot compensate for an assistant that does not help.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use AI for free?

Yes, depending on the application or service. Check its limits and whether your intended workflow requires paid features or separately billed services.

Is subscription-free AI always local?

No. An application can have a one-time license while connecting to a remote model. Payment structure and processing location are separate.

Are future updates always included in a one-time purchase?

No. Update policies vary. Read what is included and whether renewal is optional.

Will Daryl require a monthly subscription?

The planned model has no mandatory monthly subscription. Optional annual feature updates are separate from continued use of your licensed version.

Choose a payment model you understand

Work out what you need, how often you will use it, and what the complete cost will be.

Then choose software whose terms make sense for that routine.

For Daryl, we are building toward a simple arrangement: buy the application, use your licensed version, and decide whether future updates are worth renewing.
