ChatGPT vs. Local AI: What Changes for Your Privacy?

· By Michel Valenzuela, Founder of Daryl

ChatGPT processes requests through a cloud service. A local AI application can generate responses on your own device without sending the conversation to a remote AI service.

That is the main architectural difference.

ChatGPT also provides privacy controls, including options governing model training and Temporary Chat. Those controls matter, but they do not move the AI processing onto your computer.

To compare the two fairly, separate processing, training, storage, and optional connections.

Does turning off ChatGPT training keep my conversation on my computer?

No. Turning off training changes how eligible conversation content is used, rather than where responses are generated.

OpenAI’s documentation explains that you can turn off “Improve the model for everyone” in Data Controls. New conversations can remain in your history while being excluded from model training.

ChatGPT still processes your requests through its service.

This distinction is important when choosing what to share. Excluding a conversation from training is different from avoiding transmission to a remote provider.

Are all ChatGPT accounts treated the same?

No. Personal and business products have different data arrangements.

OpenAI states that it does not train on inputs and outputs from ChatGPT Business, ChatGPT Enterprise, and its API by default.

That should be reflected accurately in any comparison. It would be misleading to say that every ChatGPT conversation is used for training.

The applicable product, workspace, settings, and terms matter.

Business privacy protections also address a different question from local processing. A service can exclude content from training while still receiving and processing it remotely.

What does Temporary Chat do?

Temporary Chat provides a conversation mode with different history, memory, and training behaviour.

OpenAI says Temporary Chats do not appear in chat history, do not use or create memories, and are not used to train its models. Its guidance also states that a copy may be kept for up to 30 days for safety purposes.

Temporary Chat remains a cloud interaction.

It can be useful when you want a conversation excluded from your normal history and training. It should not be interpreted as on-device processing or a guarantee that no copy is retained.

What changes with local AI?

A locally processed conversation can remain on your computer during the generation of a response.

For example, you could describe an unfinished idea or compare two possible directions without requiring the core exchange to be sent to a remote model.

That reduces the need to share the information in the first place.

However, the entire application needs examination. It may offer remote models, online tools, diagnostics, or synchronisation alongside local processing.

Ask which features are local and what changes when you enable something connected.

Is local AI automatically more secure?

Local processing is a privacy advantage for avoiding remote transmission. It does not establish that the complete system is more secure in every respect.

Information stored on your device still depends on its protection.

Device access, account permissions, software quality, backups, and your own handling of files all matter. A poorly protected computer can expose locally retained information.

Cloud products may provide organisational controls that a personal application does not offer.

Compare the arrangements relevant to your situation rather than assuming that one label settles every concern.

Where are conversations stored?

With ChatGPT, history and retention depend on the product, conversation mode, settings, and applicable policies.

With local AI, storage depends on the application. It might save conversation files, retain selected context, or provide options to avoid saving particular exchanges.

Those local files may also be included in backups or synchronisation.

Check what is retained, where it is stored, and how deletion works. Processing locally and storing locally are related design choices, but one does not prove the other.

Can local AI still share information online?

Yes, when the application uses an online feature.

A search query is sent to a search service. Retrieving a webpage connects to that site. Selecting a remote model sends the information needed for its response.

These activities can happen within an application that also supports local AI.

The relevant question is whether the connection is necessary, understandable, and under your control.

Which approach makes sense for you?

If your requirement is to avoid sending the conversation to a remote AI provider, local processing directly addresses that requirement.

If you want cloud capabilities with content excluded from training, review the appropriate ChatGPT settings or business product terms.

You may choose different tools for different tasks.

A public research question, a confidential working document, and a personal decision do not necessarily need the same arrangement.

For professional information, follow the obligations attached to the work. Neither a privacy setting nor a local architecture automatically establishes permission to use particular material.

Why I chose local processing for Daryl

Daryl is a personal AI for Mac, currently in development, designed around conversation and support for decisions.

Those interactions can involve unfinished ideas, priorities, and circumstances you have not shared elsewhere. I want the core experience to process that information on your own computer.

That is the architectural direction.

Storage, local memory, and optional online capabilities need clear explanations and controls as they are developed. Their verified behaviour will determine the full privacy arrangement.

My aim is to give people an approachable assistant whose boundaries they can understand.

ChatGPT’s controls offer choices within a cloud service. Daryl is being built around a different starting point: core conversations processed locally.

Knowing that difference helps you decide where your thinking belongs.
